This photograph was awarded 1. place in the category "Faces of Research".A portrait of archeologist Diana Haertrich: Up until a few years ago, backhoes produced lignite in Zwenkau. At the edge of the excavation pits, archeologists investigated the largest connected excavation site in Europe with a total of 87 hectares of examined soil. Among others, the researchers located wells that were constructed 5,000 years ago. When the backhoes leave the site, the remaining holes will be flooded, thereby creating a large plain of lakes.
