A water drop forms a bead on the surface of a lotus leaf. The self-cleansing properties of many plants are due to their surface structure. Because of their surface tension and the water-repellent properties of the leaf, the water drops assume a spherical shape. They roll off the leaf, thereby taking fungal spores and other contaminations with them. The lotus effect is the hallmark of bionics.
