Physicist Stefan Thiel moves a tiny monocrystal from strontium titanate into a vacuum chamber. The crystal is a new development. What is special about it is the fact that it is surrounded by a thin film of just a few atomic layers of lanthan aluminate. Neither the crystal nor its coating conduct electricity. However, a conductive layer forms at the interface whose phenomena have hardly been researched as of yet.
