A tiny protozoan parasite, the so-called plasmodium, is responsible for the tropical disease malaria. The photograph shows what happens to the red blood cells in the body of a mosquito after it sucked blood from its infected victim: Just minutes after the bite, the malaria parasites break free from the red blood cells to multiply.
