Every year, about 200 million people worldwide develop giardiasis. This disease is caused by a monocellular parasite that typically reaches the human intestines through contaminated surface water. An infection causes the limited function of the intestinal mucosa, resulting in inflammation. The symptoms of giardiasis (Giardia lamblia) are diarrhea, flatulence and, in rare cases, fever. The photograph shows the parasite on a scale of 2000:1.
