A look into the egg of an acanthocephalan. On the inside of the egg is the larva, which is still fully enclosed by the two inner egg integuments. On the top end, the predetermined breaking point or "hatching point" is clearly visible. In the intestines of a suitable interim host, the entire second most exterior egg integument will swell and the "hatching point" will open up.
