This photograph was awarded 1. place in the category "Fascination of Research".

The photo shows a tiny ant, and the gearwheel is particularly small as well. It was taken from the construction kit for a microengine at the Karlsruhe Research Center, one of the largest research institutions for science and engineering in Europe. The entire engine has a diameter of just 1.9 millimeters.
