While the mouth opening beneath the two dark nasal apertures is fully formed in normally developed larvae of the zebrafish (right), the lower jaw of the mutant (left) is significantly reduced. Based on research with zebrafish mutants that feature jaw deformities, scientists hope to also better understand jaw deformities in humans.
