This photograph was awarded 1. place in the category "Fascination of Research".

Two fruit flies of the species Drosophila melanogaster eye to eye. The colored image shows a normal fruit fly on the right and a mutant on the left. The genetic information of the mutant features one single defective gene that plays an important role in the development of the visual organs. As a result, the mutant has no eyes. For many species - including humans - this gene (pax6) is important for eye development.
